RATIONALE
Tropical diseases pose major health threats to the
Filipino population today. The problem is confounded
by the emergence of new resistant strains of diseases
previously thought to be under control, such as
multi-drug resistant M. tuberculosis, diphtheria,
malaria, cholera and dengue hemorrhagic fever.
Vulnerability to tropical diseases is aggravated by a
number of factors. The outbreak of any tropical
disease is cause for apprehension, because poverty,
high population growth, a degraded environment, lack
of sanitation and an inadequate health care system can
feed its contagion and grow into a health crisis of
alarming proportions.
At the vanguard in the
prevention and containment of the spread of tropical
diseases are health scientists who advance our
understanding of the nature of the problem and devise
means to minimize and if possible eradicate if from
the face of the earth. Yet these people, who work
quietly in laboratories and hospitals, are seldom
recognized for their significant and often heroic
contributions to science and society.
It is for this reason
that the National Academy of Science and Technology (NAST)
and the LEL Educational Development Foundation, Inc.,
founded by Dr. Line Ed. Lim, have decided to jointly
sponsor the NAST - LELEDFI Award for Outstanding
Research in Tropical Medicine. The National Academy of
Science and Technology is the highest recognition body
in S&T in the Philippines. It was created in 1976 to
recognize outstanding achievements in science and
technology and to serve as a reservoir of competent
scientific and technological manpower for the country.
NAST is pleased to collaborate with Dr. Lino Ed Lim, a
noted philanthropist, who is himself a renowned
specialist in tropical medicine and whose healing
touch has allayed the suffering of many people for
over 60 years.
