BICUTAN, TAGUIG CITY - The National Academy of Science and Technology, Philippines (NAST PHL) will convene a hybrid forum on Net Zero for Philippine Shipping by 2050: A Possibility? on 28 February 2024, 10:00 A.M. to 12:00 P.M. (UTC+8) at the Acacia Hotel Manila, Alabang, Muntinlupa City.
In alignment with the global imperative to mitigate climate change, the International Maritime Organization (IMO) has unveiled its 2023 IMO Strategy on Reduction of GHG Emissions from ships. This landmark initiative aims to achieve net-zero emissions for international shipping by 2050, recognizing the industry’s pivotal role in global trade and its significant contribution to carbon footprint. This event will serve as a critical platform for stakeholders to delve into the complexities and opportunities surrounding the transition to net zero emissions in Philippine shipping. Drawing insights from PAGTANAW 2050, the Philippine ST&I Foresight document, participants will explore the intersections of science, technology, and innovation in driving sustainable maritime development.
The event will showcase a research fellowship paper entitled “A Marine Transportation System for a Prosperous, Archipelagic, Maritime Nation” written by Academician Reynaldo B. Vea. The discussion will revolve around the formulation of a comprehensive shipping and education ST&I roadmap, detailing various technological advancements and alternative fuel resources towards net-zero emissions by 2050. This ST&I roadmap will also emphasize the crucial role of education in nurturing the human resources capable of navigating in the evolving landscape of sustainable shipping. Furthermore, the study will illustrate practical methodologies for estimating the Carbon Intensity Indicator (CII) of existing ships and integrating CII computations into the design of new shipping vessels.
This pioneering research will offer actionable insights for policymakers and industry leaders to take urgent action to combat climate change and its impacts (Sustainable Development Goal 13) and embark on a collaborative shift to modernize the shipping industry, reduce GHG emissions, and reform maritime education in a time of heightened global competition.
