Acclaimed Nobel Laureate Scientists to Visit RP

 

 

                                     Prof. Gross during the Dialogue with Researchers held

                                         on 09 January 2008 at UP NISMED

 

          Six acclaimed Nobel Laureates scientists (Physics, Chemistry, Medicine, Economics, Literature and Peace) are scheduled to visit the country starting this January to April 2008 to conduct scientific lectures, seminars, workshops, dialogues and be of assistance  in packaging science activities for the public along their areas of specialization.

 

          First to arrive is Prof. David J. Gross, 2004 Nobel Prize Winner for Physics. Prof. Gross discovered and explored the force that binds particles inside atomic nucleus, a phenomenon that led to whole new physical theory and allowed other scientist to complete the standard model of particle physics - describing the fundamental particles in nature and how they interact with one another.

 

Prof. Gross' lecture and dialogue will be on 09 January, Wednesday, 2:00 pm at the University of the Philippines National Institute for Science and Mathematics Education Development (UP NISMED). Various national institutions including the Department of Science and Technology (DOST), Angeles University, Asian Institute of Management, Ateneo de Manila/ Davao  University serve as local hosts of BRIDGES. This event was organized by DOST in collaboration with its agencies - NAST, NRCP, and PCASTRD.

 

DOST SEI/PCASTRD scholars (BS, MS, PhD), NAST Academicians, NRCP/PCHRD members and researchers, scientists and technologists from state colleges and universities were invited to participate.

 

The Nobel Laureates visit is being held simultaneously in Thailand and is facilitated by the Vienna-based International Peace Foundation through its program called BRIDGES: Dialogue Towards a Culture of Peace, DOST NAST Executive Director Luningning Samarita said.

 

Sitting as chairpersons for BRIDGES Philippines are Mr. Jaime Augusto Zobel de Ayala, Chairman and CEO of Ayala Corporation and Mr. Washington Sycip, founding Chairman of the SGV Group and of the Asian Institute of Management.

 

Other Nobel Laureates  coming are: in February - Prof. Finn E. Kydland (Economics); in March - Mr. James D. Wolfensohn (Peace)and Prof. David Baltimore (Medicine); in April - Prof. Aaron Ciechanover (Chemistry) and Prof. Jose Ramos-Horta (Peace).
